What Are Lean and Green Meals in the Medifast Diet?

I’ve been on?this diet?for quite a while and often write about my experiences on it.? The other day, someone emailed me and asked “what is the lean and green meal for the medifast diet?”? I’ll answer this question in the following article.

Lean And Green Defined: When you’re on the medifast diet, you eat six times per day.? Five times per day, you eat the foods that the company provides you with.? These are prepackaged meals that don’t require a lot of preparation.? Examples are shakes, bars, chilis, stews, oatmeals, eggs, soups, cappuccinos, hot chocolate, chips, and fruit drinks.

But, once per day, you prepare a larger, more substantial meal yourself.? This meal is called the “lean and green meal.”? And it get it’s name from the fact that it consists of lean protein and vegetables. (This is the simplified version.? Some people?get very elaborate with this.) ?You can have this meal at any time of the day.? I mostly have it for dinner, but sometimes, I’ll have it at around 3 o’clock in the afternoon if I know that I’m going to be busy (and tempted) later.

Examples Of?A Medifast?Lean And Green Meal:? Many people don’t realize how many foods are fair game here.? The company even allows you to get this at a restaurant as long as you follow the guidelines – which are basically 5 – 7 ounces of lean meat or protein (chicken, turkey, beef, fish, lobster, lamb, veil, eggs, veggie patties, vegetarian TVP etc.) and any THREE servings from the approved veggie list.? The company breaks the veggies down into those that are higher and lower on the glycemic scale.? You’re encouraged to stick with things that are on the low side, but most things are far game.

Examples of approved vegetables are tomatoes, green beans, salads, cucumbers, mushrooms, eggplants, squash, and peppers, just to name a few.

I don’t like to cook much, so I will generally get my vegetables from bagged salads and stir fry.? But, many people make these lean and green meals very elaborate.? There are tons of recipes out there.? In fact, Kristi Swanson has posted great recipes for spaghetti primavera and garbanzo soup.? (Soups and stir fries are great ways to incorporate all the veggies and the lean meats into one easy meal.)

At restaurants, any form of lean meat with some vegetables are totally fine.? I don’t avoid restaurants on this diet and if I occasionally have pasta or bread at a restaurant, I don’t beat myself up. I’ve lost over 80 pounds so I think I’m doing OK.? Just do the best that you can, knowing that if you stick to the diet most of the time you’re going to be taking in few fewer calories than usual and you will lose weight.
